In the above example the two floaters are subject to two different waves which propagate through their medium. First they are subject to a small disturbance with a small wave length. Later a larger disturbance with a larger wave length interferes with the first disturbance. The total disturbance is the sum of the two.

When the floaters are subject to two disturbances that can be described by the sum of the displacements caused by each of the two waves separately.
