For the previous example we arrived at the result

x(t) = 1.06t - 3.18 cm    and    y(t) = 0.44t + 1.70 cm

In vector notation, this result reads

r(t) = x(t)i + y(t)j = (1.06t-3.18)i + (0.44t+1.70)j cm

Sometimes we will use the following column notation

r(t) = (
x(t)
y(t)
) = (
1.06t-3.18
0.44t+1.70
) cm

The x component comes upstairs, whereas the y component comes downstairs.
