Free fall with initial velocity

The acceleration a of the particle is given by the weight mg of the particle and by the second law of Newton.

m ( axi + ayj ) = m a = F = - mgj

or in column notation

(
m ax
m ay
) = m (
ax
ay
) = m a = F = (
0
-mg
)   →   a = (
0
-g
)

We find that the particle has no acceleration in the horizontal x direction (ax = 0), whereas its acceleration in the vertical y direction is given by gravity (ay = -g) and is independent of the mass m of the particle.
